California Open Enrollment Dates
As of now, California’s Open Enrollment Period is the longest in the nation. While President Trump and his administration made a decision to shorten the federal Open Enrollment, California decided to extend it for residents. Unlike last year, California’s Open Enrollment will run through the following dates:
- October 15, 2018 - January 15, 2019
During this time, California residents will be able to take advantage and enroll in Affordable Care Act marketplace medical insurance plans. Is Health Insurance Mandatory In California?
No, as of 2019 health insurance is no longer mandatory in California, but that may change. After President Obama passed the Affordable Care Act, one of the pieces of legislation that was passed with it was the individual mandate. The individual mandate required everyone, with a few exceptions, to enroll in a health insurance plan, or pay a penalty during tax season.
However, more recently, President Trump signed an executive order that killed the individual mandate starting in 2019. Although, if you don’t have health coverage in 2018, you will still be subject to a tax penalty. Some states decided to fight back against Trump’s executive order, and created individual mandates of their own. California is still considering whether or not to implement their own health insurance requirement, but as of now, you don’t need to be enrolled in a medical insurance plan.
