Overview Of Health Insurance In California

California, nicknamed The Golden State for a number of reasons including the gold rush and fields of yellow poppies, is known for its booming economy, hundreds of miles of golden coast, and Hollywood. As the 31st state to enter the union, California ranks 3rd in total area, and 1st in population.

California also cracks the top 10, coming in at the number 7 healthiest state in the country. With plenty of hiking trails, beaches, and national parks, it’s not hard to see why residents of The Golden State boast one of the longest lifespans in the nation. However, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to your healthcare, and health coverage plays an important role.

Finding Health Coverage In California

Living in California, we probably don’t need to tell you how to lead a healthy life, but what many may not know is that it takes more than eating right and staying active. Having health insurance in California not only protects you from the rising cost of healthcare in the state, but gives you access to benefits like preventive services and a primary care physician that will stay on top of all of your health needs. If you’re looking for coverage, here’s how to get started.

California Open Enrollment Dates

As of now, California’s Open Enrollment Period is the longest in the nation. While President Trump and his administration made a decision to shorten the federal Open Enrollment, California decided to extend it for residents. Unlike last year, California’s Open Enrollment will run through the following dates:

  • October 15, 2018 - January 15, 2019

During this time, California residents will be able to take advantage and enroll in Affordable Care Act marketplace medical insurance plans. This means that you will be guaranteed coverage regardless of if you have a pre-existing or chronic health condition, and you won’t even be charged more for your plan.

This is also the time you can apply for a health insurance subsidy if you qualify financially. For anyone living with a pre-existing condition, or anyone who qualifies for a subsidy, this will be you best bet at finding affordable health coverage.

Is Health Insurance Mandatory In California?

No, as of 2019 health insurance is no longer mandatory in California, but that may change. After President Obama passed the Affordable Care Act, one of the pieces of legislation that was passed with it was the individual mandate. The individual mandate required everyone, with a few exceptions, to enroll in a health insurance plan, or pay a penalty during tax season.

However, more recently, President Trump signed an executive order that killed the individual mandate starting in 2019. Although, if you don’t have health coverage in 2018, you will still be subject to a tax penalty. Some states decided to fight back against Trump’s executive order, and created individual mandates of their own. California is still considering whether or not to implement their own health insurance requirement, but as of now, you don’t need to be enrolled in a medical insurance plan.
